What It Means To Be Meek

Meekness can be a difficult thing to define. Webster definition is “Having or showing a quiet and gentle nature: not wanting to fight or argue with other people” I can get on bored with this definition. However as my faith continues to grow the word meek or meekness has taken on a whole new meaning to me. As a young Christian when I would come across the word meek I thought as the world does of the word. To be meek meant to be week. I like to think of myself as a strong person. So naturally it never quit sank in with me until I starting really searching the bible to better understand this word that I just didnt get.

The bible regards meekness or being meek as a highly desired quality. In Numbers 12:3 Moses is refers to as meek. “Now Moses was very meek, above all men which were upon the earth.” Obviously God thought very highly of a meek man. Moses and God has a very deep and special relationship. Mathew 5:5 says “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth”. One of my favorite scriptures on meekness psalm 22:26 ” the meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the lord that seek him: your heart shall live forever.” This simple says to me that the meek will be satisfied and content. Contentment is something I am always struggling to grasp. It’s so easy to get caught up in the things of the world and being content with what you have at the moment. if you have a meek spirit contentment will soon follow. When speaking of what a good Christian wife looks like this is the explanation we get in 1st Peter 3:4 “But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quite spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price”

Gods view of the word meek is so complex and yet very simple. It’s being courageous, humble, kind and gentle. These are all wonderful qualities and meekness is something I will continue to strive for. Reminding myself that although the world will tell you being fierce and hard will get you what you want. Jesus tells us that having a meek spirt will take you further than you can ever imagine and you will get the Ultimate prize of immortality and living beside Jesus forever.
